  33. INSTALLING THE SERVICE FOR NDS
  34. ==============================

  36. If you already have Windows 95 installed, and you wish to install the Service
  37. for NDS, you must do this via the Network Control Panel. Thus, if you wish to
  38. install it on multiple computers running Windows 95, you will have to do this
  39. on each computer.
  40.  
  41. To install the Service for NDS on a computer running Windows 95, follow these
  42. steps:
  43. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Network icon
  44. 2. Click Add.
  45. 3. Double-click Service.
  46. 4. Click Have Disk, and then type the drive name for the disk or network drive
  47. where the Service for NDS files are located.
  48.  
  49. WARNING  Do not click Cancel during the installation. If, for some reason,
  50. you decide that you do not want to install the Service for NDS, you must
  51. complete the installation process, and then remove the Service for NDS.
  52. For more information on removing the Service for NDS, see
  53. UNINSTALLING THE SERVICE FOR NDS in this document.

  55. 5. The next time you start your computer, you are prompted to log in to the
  56. NDS tree. Make sure the dialog box refers to the correct context and tree.

  59. If you wish to install Service for NDS at the same time that you install
  60. Windows 95, you may do so in either of the following two ways:
  61. 1. You may include Service for NDS in an automated installation of Windows
  62. 95. Automated installation uses a file called MSBATCH.INF in order to
  63. install Windows 95 without requiring any user intervention. Because you
  64. can include Service for NDS in this procedure, you will not have to install
  65. it separately at each computer.
  66. 2. You may install Service for NDS from within the Windows 95 setup program.
  67. During Windows 95 setup, choose to do a "Custom" installation.
  68. At the Network Configuration screen during setup, follow steps 2-5 above.

  70. You can also include Microsoft Service for NDS in server-based installations
  71. of Windows 95.

  73. For more information about these options, please refer to the MSNDS.HLP file
  74. included with the Service for NDS. This help file must be viewed on a computer
  75. running Windows 95.

  79. UNINSTALLING THE SERVICE FOR NDS
  80. ================================
  81. Note:  You cannot remove the Service for NDS from a computer running a shared
  82. installation of Windows 95.
  83.  
  84. Before you begin, make sure your Windows 95 Setup disk is nearby. During the
  85. removal process, you are prompted for files located on it.
  86.  
  87. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Network icon.
  88. 2. Click Service for NetWare Directory Services, and then click Remove.
  89.  
  90. Note:  When Windows 95 is copying networking files from your Windows 95 Setup
  91. disk, a message will appear several times, saying that older versions of files
  92. are being copied to your computer, and asking whether you want to keep the
  93. newer version that is currently on your computer. In order to remove the
  94. Service for NDS, click No for the following files: NWREDIR.VXD, NWNP32.DLL,
  95. and NETWARE.TMP.

  98. OTHER DOCUMENTATION FOR THE SERVICE FOR NDS

  100. For detailed information about installing, configuring, and using Service for
  101. NDS, see MSNDS.HLP, which is included in this distribution of Service for NDS.
  102. This help file must be viewed on a computer running Windows 95.

  105. RUNNING NDS-AWARE APPLICATIONS 
  106. ==============================
  107. If your users need to run NetWare applications (including NDS ones) with
  108. Windows 95 and Service for NDS, they will need access to, and the appropriate
  109. license to use, the following Novell-supplied files:
  110.  
  111. NWCALLS.DLL
  112. NWLOCALE.DLL
  113. NWIPXSPX.DLL
  114. NWNET.DLL
  115. NWGDI.DLL
  116. NWPSRV.DLL
  117.  
  118. These DLLs are also needed if you wish to use the Passwords option in
  119. Control Panel in order to change passwords on bindery servers.
  120.  
  121. The Microsoft Service for NDS searches for these files in locations in the
  122. user's search path statement. If you put these files in a directory on a
  123. server, make sure the directory is in each of your users' search path
  124. statements. We recommend that you place these files in the SYS:PUBLIC
  125. directory of your users' preferred servers.
  126.  
  127. Some third-party NDS-aware applications expect these Novell DLLs to be loaded.
  128. Service for NDS does not load these DLL's by default, but there is a system
  129. policy you can set to have these dll's loaded. See MSNDS.HLP for more
  130. information.
  131.  
  132. Many third-party NDS-aware applications access the unicode tables in the
  133. PUBLIC\NLS directory on the server. It is important that you put this
  134. directory in your search path (by mapping a search drive) in order to run
  135. such applications. If the NLS directory is not in the search path, the
  136. application may show an error message stating that the unicode tables could
  137. not be found, or that the Context could not be set.

  141. KNOWN ISSUES
  142. ============
  143.  
  144. ADDING PRINTERS: BROWSING FOR NDS PRINTERS FROM THE ADD PRINTER WIZARD
  145. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  146. If you choose "Browse" from the Add Printer wizard, you will not be able to
  147. see NDS printers. (You will see bindery printers). There will soon be an
  148. update to a Windows 95 component named SHELL32.DLL that will fix this. This
  149. fix can be found in the same online location as the Service For NDS. For
  150. example, on the World Wide Web, go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows. From
  151. there, go to the Software Library, then to Windows 95 Updates.

  153. Warning: do not update to this new English version of SHELL32.DLL if you are
  154. not running an English version of Windows 95. Localized versions will be made
  155. available at a later date.

  158. BRIEFCASE: COPYING FILES FROM A DRIVE LETTER THAT IS MAPPED TO THE ROOT
  159. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
  160. Copying a file to the Briefcase from a network drive that is mapped to the
  161. root does not work in Service for NDS.

  164. WINPOPUP: SENDING MESSAGES TO NDS USERS
  165. ---------------------------------------
  166. Winpopup allows you to receive NetWare messages. However, it does not allow
  167. you to send messages to NDS users. You can send messages to bindery users.
  168. You may use Novell's SEND command or the NETUSER utility to send messages
  169. to NDS users.

  172. RUNNING NT AND NETWARE LOGIN SCRIPTS
  173. ------------------------------------
  174. If you are running both the Service for NDS and the Client for Microsoft
  175. networks, Windows NT login scripts will always run before NetWare login
  176. scripts, regardless of which client is primary.

  180. AVAILABILITY IN OTHER LANGUAGES
  181. ===============================
  182. As of this writing (October 13, 1995), the Service for NDS is available in
  183. English only. A German version will be made available near the end of October.
  184. Some other localized versions will be made available in the next few months.
  185. It is possible to use the English version of Service for NDS with some
  186. localized versions of Windows 95. However, some of the user interface will
  187. then be in English.
